Guilty Pleasure (Protect and Serve Book 3) Page 4

“Henry, I swear it’s not like that—” I began, but he didn’t let me finish.

“How long’s this been going on? Is that why you wanted to be her partner so bad?” he demanded, coming to stand in front of us. For some reason, I felt an instinctive need to protect Veronica right then.

“Me?” I asked incredulously, jumping to my feet. “I didn’t want any partner, least of all your daughter! I didn’t want the responsibility of keeping her safe, of knowing that if anything happened to her, I’d let both of you down!”

“Yeah well, you really let me down now.” Henry looked down and rubbed the back of his neck with his hand for a moment while the silence hung thick in the air, none of us knowing what to say to ease the tension. Finally, he looked up and stared me dead in the eye as he said, “I meant what I said. Get out of here. I don’t want to see you.”

“Dad? If he leaves, I’m leaving with him.” Veronica said, coming to stand up next to me.

There was nothing defiant in her tone or her stance. It was more… pleading. It was like a reminder that I mattered to her and she mattered to Henry, and she was begging us all to figure this out.

Was this what I’d meant by how and why? I wanted Veronica, I loved her with all of my being. But did that matter enough to make her break her dad’s heart, to leave him alone with literally no one else on earth to care about him?

I wasn’t sure I could do that… to either of them. Veronica may be the woman I loved, but Henry’s was my best friend. If I was the thing that came between them, I’d never forgive myself.

For a moment, it looked like Henry was going to see reason. I certainly didn’t expect him to laugh it off and offer me a beer, but his daughter’s declaration did seem to give him pause. At least, that’s how it looked.

“Fine. Then get your ass out of here, too. I don’t want to see either of you when I get back.”

And with that, Henry turned and left, slamming the door to the cabin behind him.

  About the Author

Nadine is a sloppy romantic at heart. She loves to curl up on her front porch swing in the mornings with her extra large cup of coffee and lose herself in a blissfully, butterfly-filled, pure romance story. However, her guilty pleasures are found within the pages of the steamy romances with sexy alpha’s that ignite temptation, desire, and lust.

As much as she enjoys reading romances, she enjoys writing them even more. She thrives on the opportunity to give her readers the chance to escape into the chiseled arms of their latest book boyfriend and leave them fantasizing days later.

She has been punching keys for years and now that she has built up a collection of heartthrobs, she is ready to finally share them with the world.
